Autoplans vs Notion
Notion is a workspace you shape into whatever you need. Autoplans is one shape, built for one job: a backlog an AI coding agent can execute.
What Notion is
Notion is a documents-and-databases workspace. You build the tool you want out of pages, properties and views, and that flexibility is the reason people love it and the reason two Notion setups never look alike. A great many software projects are planned in it.
Stay with Notion if
- •Your plan lives next to specs, notes, meeting records and everything else, and separating them would cost more than it gains.
- •Non-developers read and edit the same pages.
- •The structure you have built is doing real work that a fixed task model would not express.
Consider Autoplans if
- •The plan is mostly for you and your agent, and the flexibility is overhead.
- •You want the breakdown generated rather than written.
- •You want an agent that can act on the plan, not just read the page.
Where they differ
| Autoplans | Notion | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Fixed and small: project → task → subtask, with priority, status and dependencies. An agent knows the shape without being told. | Whatever you build. Powerful, and different in every workspace. |
| Getting a plan | Describe the project; the planning agent produces the breakdown. | You write it, or start from a template. |
| Agent access | Around forty MCP tools shaped around planning and execution, including ones that answer "what should I work on and am I blocked". | General workspace access. The agent has to work out what your particular structure means. |
| Alongside the code | Syncs to a .autoplans folder in the repository; visible in VS Code and Obsidian. | Lives in the workspace, linked to from the code. |
Questions
Can I keep my notes in Notion and my tasks in Autoplans?
Yes, and that is the common arrangement. If your notes are in Obsidian instead, the Autoplans plugin syncs tasks into the vault both ways, so the notes and the backlog end up in the same place.
