Autoplans vs Linear

Linear is a fast, opinionated issue tracker for product teams. Autoplans is a planning layer for coding agents. They overlap on the noun "task" and diverge on almost everything else.

What Linear is

Linear is an issue tracker for software teams, known for speed, keyboard-driven navigation and a deliberately opinionated model — cycles, projects, issues — that it does not let you reconfigure much. That opinionatedness is the product: teams pick it because the defaults are good and there is nothing to administer.

Stay with Linear if

  • You have a product team with a cadence — cycles, triage, roadmap — and Linear is what runs it.
  • Several people need to see and reshape the same board every day.
  • The tracker is where planning conversations happen, not just where results are recorded.

Consider Autoplans if

  • You are the only person reading the board, and it is mostly a to-do list for your agent.
  • The valuable output is the plan itself, and writing it by hand is the bottleneck.
  • You want the backlog reachable from the editor and the agent without a browser tab.

Where they differ

AutoplansLinear
The unit of workA task an agent can act on, carrying its dependencies and its acceptance criteria in a form a model reads. An issue a person picks up, written for another person to read.
How the backlog gets writtenGenerated from a description, then edited. Producing fifty tasks is one paragraph of work.Typed by the team, which is why teams keep Linear tidy and small.
Where you see itIn VS Code, in Obsidian, in the desktop app, in the CLI, in the browser, and inside any MCP client.A polished web and desktop app, plus integrations.
ExecutionCoding agents run tasks and open pull requests; task status updates as they go.Tracks the work; the work happens elsewhere.

Questions

Does Autoplans have cycles and sprints?

No. It has projects, tasks, subtasks, priorities, statuses and dependencies. Sprint cadence is a coordination device for teams of people; the thing Autoplans coordinates is an agent, which does not need a two-week boundary.

Can Linear and Autoplans coexist?

Yes. Both are reachable over MCP, so an agent can read a Linear issue and write the resulting task breakdown into Autoplans, or the reverse. Nothing about Autoplans assumes it is the only tracker you use.
